“The female figures that appear on my canvases are 'vessels' used to depict the human soul, in all its rawness and vulnerability”
Born in Germany in 1992, Delia was raised in the countryside of southern Spain.
The artist’s work invites us into a dreamlike world, inspired by the expression of self and as well imbued with references from mythological and biblical tales. Yet, she focuses mainly on the depiction of human figures, with an emphasis on the portrayal of women, with their eyes closed or an interiorized gaze, concealed from the outside world. Solitude is captured, not loneliness ; “A conscious retreat back into Garden Eden” as Hamer calls it. The reoccurring symbols she uses (palm trees, oranges, agaves…) are a nod to her childhood spent on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Delia Hamer harmoniously blends texture and liquidity through the deployment of a variety of techniques (acrylic and oil paint, pastels, pencils, paper collage, gold foil,…) and a palette of vibrant colors.
She graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and did her masters at the University of the Arts of London (UAL), and currently lives and works in Amsterdam.
